Finding Happiness in Every Day

Finding Happiness in Every Day

These days, all you have to do is turn on the news or scroll through social media to find a million reasons to be negative. As a society, we love to complain and vent about our problems, even to the extent that we have trouble identifying what makes us happy in our daily lives. We may fall into the trap of thinking that we can only be happy if we have a lot of money, or a big home, or the latest technology. A lot of times, we think that once we’ve achieved our career or life goals, then we’ll truly be happy.   But those are far from the only ways to find happiness in your daily life. Finding something to be positive about is so important, no matter which way you achieve it. Even something small like fresh flowers in your kitchen or a conversation with a friend can help lift your spirits and put a positive spin on your whole day!   First things first, figure out what’s causing your discontentment. Was it the news story you saw while you were eating breakfast? A sad post your friend shared on Facebook? Try to cut back on these things or find some other way to get your news and keep up with friends and family. While it’s important to know what’s going on in the world and with your loved ones, if it’s making you depressed, it’s okay to take a step back. What about a frustrating conversation with a coworker or friend, or a difficult family situation? It’s important to reflect on these things and to...
The Importance of the Off Button

The Importance of the Off Button

Technology has a lot of benefits, and one of the biggest is how easy it is to communicate with people all around the world. Today more than ever, it’s so easy to keep up with friends and family who live far away and to stay up to date on news around the world. Phones and computers have apps and programs that are incredibly helpful for everyone from small business owners to students working on school projects to grandparents trying to stay in touch with their grandchildren (and everyone in between).   But as we get more and more attached to our phones, we might also be missing out on some benefits that we can get from not being connected all the time. It’s not easy – turning your phone off or getting off social media, even for a little bit, or not answering a text message right away. We’re so used to having everything at our fingertips in an instant through our phones and computers and tablets that it can be difficult to step away from it.   There are several benefits to taking a step back though, whether it’s for a long period of time or less than a day. To start, putting away screens before bed has been shown to help you sleep better – the bright light of your phone or computer tricks your body into thinking that it’s still daytime, and therefore makes it harder for you to fall asleep.  ...

Overcoming First Day Jitters

Overcoming First Day Jitters

Whether it’s your first day of college, your first day at a new job, or something in between, it’s common to feel more than a little nervous. We’re constantly being reminded of the importance of first impressions, so it’s perfectly normal to worry about things going wrong when starting something new.   But just because it’s common doesn’t mean that you have to suffer through it! While there’s no surefire way to completely ease any first day nerves, there are a few things you can do to help yourself feel more confident and ready for what lies ahead.   Be prepared. This can cover a lot of different things, from gathering any papers or information you’ll need to knowing where to go and at what time. Having everything ready and planned out ahead of time can do a lot to ease your worries and help you feel more confident. Dress for success (and comfortably). While you should try to abide by any dress code or suggestions that you’re given, wear something that you are comfortable in if possible. You’ll be less likely to fidget with your clothes if it’s an outfit that you’ve worn before and you’ll focus less on your appearance and more on the task ahead of you. Take a drive. Or a walk, or a bus ride – you get the idea. If possible, see how long it will take you to get from your home to wherever you need to go, especially at the time of day when you’ll be traveling. Not only will you be more familiar with the route, especially if it’s one...
