The 3 Kinds of Adoption: You Can Choose the One That’s Best for You.

It is important to understand all the different options available to you as a birth mother. You have the ability to choose the future family for your baby and the type of relationship you will have with your child and the adoptive family.

There are three main types of adoptions to consider, depending on what level of involvement you want to have in your child’s life and how much privacy you want.

1. Closed Adoption

With a closed adoption, you would have no further contact with your child or the adoptive family. You also have the option to have your identity remain 100% confidential. The adoption agency may collect photos and updates on your behalf and give them to you if you request them later.

This option may be good for you if:

  1. You want to remain anonymous
  2. You wish to have no further contact
  3. You want the peace of mind that your privacy will be respected

2. Semi-Open Adoption

A semi-open adoption allows the birth mom to get regular updates about the child with the adoption agency as a go-between. There’s no direct contact between you and the adoptive family.

This option may be good for you if:

  1. You value your privacy and confidentiality
  2. You are interested in being updated with information and pictures
  3. You want the peace of mind that comes from ongoing updates

3. Open Adoption

With an open adoption, you choose how much and what kind of contact you want to have with the adoptive family and your child. It may be sharing info and pictures with each other. Or it could be a close, personal relationship. Or anything in between. It all depends on how active you want to be in your child’s life.

This option may be good for you if:

  1. You want to be a part of your child’s life
  2. You want to leave that door open
  3. You want the peace of mind that an ongoing relationship brings

* Please note that open adoption plans may not always be legally enforceable in the state of Texas.
