Overcoming First Day Jitters

Whether it’s your first day of college, your first day at a new job, or something in between, it’s common to feel more than a little nervous. We’re constantly being reminded of the importance of first impressions, so it’s perfectly normal to worry about things going wrong when starting something new.

But just because it’s common doesn’t mean that you have to suffer through it! While there’s no surefire way to completely ease any first day nerves, there are a few things you can do to help yourself feel more confident and ready for what lies ahead.

  1. Be prepared. This can cover a lot of different things, from gathering any papers or information you’ll need to knowing where to go and at what time. Having everything ready and planned out ahead of time can do a lot to ease your worries and help you feel more confident.
  2. Dress for success (and comfortably). While you should try to abide by any dress code or suggestions that you’re given, wear something that you are comfortable in if possible. You’ll be less likely to fidget with your clothes if it’s an outfit that you’ve worn before and you’ll focus less on your appearance and more on the task ahead of you.
  3. Take a drive. Or a walk, or a bus ride – you get the idea. If possible, see how long it will take you to get from your home to wherever you need to go, especially at the time of day when you’ll be traveling. Not only will you be more familiar with the route, especially if it’s one you’ve never taken before, but you’ll have a better idea of how much time you’ll need on the big day.
  4. Ask questions. More than likely, you’ll get a lot of information on your first day and you’ll be introduced to a lot of new people. While you should do your best to pay attention and learn people’s names, don’t be afraid to ask questions if you missed something or if something wasn’t explained enough. Getting those questions settled early will save you from stress and uncertainty later.
  5. Just breathe! The first day at a new school or a new job always comes with nerves, but most of the time they don’t last. Once you are comfortable in your new environment, you’ll wonder why you were even nervous in the first place! Just take a deep breath, and remember that your first day is only one day, and that each day in your new environment will be easier and easier.

With just a few small steps, you can fight those first day jitters and feel more confident and ready for the day!
